App developers are the hottest commodity tech companies will seek in 2014; desk staffers aren’t far behind, according to Computerworld’s survey
Demand in IT jobs will pretty much remain the same in the US, with only the slightest drop of 1 percent over the next year, according to Computerworld’s annual Forecast survey: 32 percent of tech companies will seek to up their employee count in 2014, compared to a 33 percent projection in 2013. And though the overall prospects will remain the same, there has been a slight relocation of job titles in the competition ladder. Here’s a rundown:
1. Application development: Holding onto top spot, app developers and programmers will remain the hottest commodity tech companies will seek in 2014, although less than 50 percent of respondents expect to make new hires in this area of expertize, compared to last year’s 60 percent quota. Companies taking part in the survey, note that the field features the lowest unemployment rate in the IT world, and though developer openings are hard to fill, high-end companies will focus their employment sights to experienced pros with specific expertize.
2. Help desk / technical support: Rising up from 2013’s 3rd spot to next year’s 2nd, help desk openings are expected to mark a significant rise, with companies starting to bring help desk support back in-house, as opposed to outsourced tactics practiced in previous years. This turn is indicative of a healthily growing economy in the tech world, which will now prefer to have tech-support staff close to the technologies they’re offering support for.
3. Network engineers: Demand for network specialists notes an explosive boost, rising all the way to third place from last years fifth. Rising need for wireless connectivity is a major factor in this field’s growth, with wireless functions being added to all sorts of devices, from home appliances to medical equipment. This shift in technology creates added workload relating to both network stability and device troubleshooting.
4. Mobile app and device management: Climbing from 9th to 4th spot, this field’s rise goes hand in hand with mobile device’s ever-expanding popularity. More and more non-tech companies seek to implement the smartphone craze into their marketing plans, thus creating a never-ending demand for mobile app experts.
5. Project Management: Managerial positions have always been a volatile field, and this is once more underlined by the job title’s drop from 2nd to 5th spot. However, given that the job description demands pros that can easily switch from tech-savvy leaders to full-fledged business managers, it is still considered a quintessential position for any company seeking secure growth, with expertize in this field regarded as a highly prestigious accomplishment.
