I just want to share my experience regarding this update. After upgrading my system (OS) to Windows 7 64bit I am having difficulty installing SP3 of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. After countless days and nights of research I found out that a 64bit platform particularly on Intel processor is not supported by this update.
However, if you have AMD processor you are not affected by this update as Microsoft said:
SQL Server Express is supported on x64 and EMT64 systems in Windows On Windows (WOW). SQL Server Express is not supported on IA64 systems.
This means that SP3 is supported only on AMD 64bit processor and not on Intel IA64. It is very annoying while the system updates it automatically and hangs up your computer because it cannot continue updating the service pack.
Resolution:
The only solution I found on this problem is to disable automatic update on Windows. Well, of course you need to update your system or else you are prone to any attacks.
Just change the settings on your windows update to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". In this case you still have control over what updates you'd like to install. So disregard the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 update.
